Literacy B, Blog 6 - Classroom Libraries

Several of our readings this quarter have focused on the importance of the classroom library. Children need to be exposed to and have ready access to quality literature. Diane talks in her blog, Life Is Good, about how the classroom library can often be the only source for literature that some students have. A quality library truly must be the main characteristic of a quality classroom. But how does a new teacher go about creating a library? I have seen some classroom libraries that must have taken years to stock. How does a new teacher choose which to collect first and then go about finding and affording these books/magazines? I also wonder if a teacher should have read every book in his/her library? If not, then how can a teacher rate books? I was glad to see a list of resources for children's books on page 206 of Graves, Juel, and Graves article, Teaching Reading in the 21st Century. But it does seem a daunting prospect.
